Karasjok is a junction between East and West in Finnmark County and Finland and Finnmark. It is the gateway to Saami country. Surface area are 5.452,9 km2, with approximately 2.900 inhabitants. Many of the most important Saami national institutions are located here, incl. The Saami Collections Museum (De Samiske Samlinger) and the Saami Parliament. In many ways, Karasjok is the cultural and social capital for the Saami people in Norway. Do you long for contrasting exhilarating scenery that changes its mood according to the season?

In Winter, Karasjok´s plateau and mountains are covered in snow, with mild-weather valleys where green pine trees stand tall and lend a sense of warmth to the landscape - encouring people to live here, even when the temperatures reach 40C.

In Summer, you will wonder over the luxuriant green vegetation in the river valley. You can walk through dense woods of pine and birch up to the wide open mountain plateau.

In Autumn, the landscape is a dazzling display of colour that cannot be equalled anywhere else. You will discover all species of fish in the many lakes and rivers - from salmon, trout, Arctic trout to powan, harr and perch. Karasjok does not just offer one but a diversified range of experiences. You would have to be extremely fussy, if you could not find something to interest you here, whether you travel here to witness the Midnight Sun or the crisp clear Polar Winter.

ASSEBAKTI

A cultural and scenic walk. "Footprints Towards the North". A 16 km from Karasjok town. A 3,5 km trail, which allows you to be better acquainted with segments of Saami culture, historic and prehistoric. Along the path you will see over one hundred cultural sites of preservation from ancient times.

KARASJOK CHURCH

Karasjok Church is one of the few churches in Europe that has a doubled pulpit, out of consideration for the bilingual population. The Old Church, from 1807 is one of the oldest buildings in Finnmark.

THE SAMELAND CENTRE

The Sameland Centre provides information on activities.

Gammen:
Saami turf hut, where traditional Saami food is served that is based on raw ingredients found in the Arctic landscape. Saami camp with reindeer. You will also gain insight into the production of local handicrafts, silver products and knives.

MIDNIGHT SUN

The Midnight Sun stays above the horizon, and it is light 24 hours a day. The sky must be clear and there must be unobstructed visibility northwards in order to see the Midnight Sun. A summer night on the fjord or in the mountains is an experience not to be missed, you can go fishing in the fjord, which contains splendid variation of fish, or you can take a walk in the wilderness surrounding.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Aurora Borealis is the Latin name for the Northern Lights – solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole. The Northern Lights are only visible when the sky is dark and clear, from August to April, and they are most intense from 10 pm to midnight. The region on the 700 northern latitude is a fantastic place for experiencing the beautiful and intense play of colours given off by the Northern Lights.

POLAR NIGHT

The dark time, or the long, dark Polar Night, lasts from 30th November - 12th January - there is only a twilight-dusk type of light (the blue light) for a few hours during the middle of the day. This does not mean that it becomes totally dark, however. The aurora borealis trails its multicoloured banner across the sky and the moon lights the scene just like the nightlight of Our Lord. The experience of the winter with the uniqueness of the light, the northern lights and snow is fantastic. Especially beautiful is the blue light southwards, just before it becomes dark.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Plan your own trip on the plateau. There are mountain lodges and a network of marked trails, for Summer and Winter walks.

Karasjok tempts you with exciting Winter activities also, like reindeer races, excursions to the reindeer herds, amazing rides on dogsleds and snow scooters, skiing on marked trails, floodlit trails and slalom slopes. FISHING

Salmon fishing in Tanaelva river. Karasjok has many pleasant strands along the banks of the river, which invites you with its pure waters and sandy stretches that are several kilometres long. When the powers that be are in a good mood, the waters can be as warm as 18 - 20 degrees Celsius.

At the turn of the century, commercial gold sluicing took place in the riverbed. The mother lode was never found. Besides gold panning, the rivers are an experience not to be missed for canoe paddlers and salmon fishermen. You can also take a riverboat ride with the famous Saami riverboat.

GOLF

Karasjok Golfclub is a golf course with 6 holes and a variation of difficulties. The course lies close from the bridge in Márkangeaidnu.
