Ørskog municipality has approximately 2.120 inhabitants and covers a area of 129,5 km2. Ørskog has been inhabited from ancient times, as several prehistoric finds bear witness to, and the municipality has long been a cultural centre in Sunnmøre. Ørskog is centrally situated on the north side of Storfjorden, linking the outer coastal areas and the inner fjord districts in the northern Sunnmøre. The main road Rv 650 from the fjord districts meets the E39 / E136 in the municipal centre, Sjøholt.

Some mountains in the area is Vaksvikfjellet mountain, Lauparen 1.434 metres and Høgsvora 1.164 metres. The scenery is beautiful and varied. The Ørskog and Vaksvik mountains are much favoured excursion areas for the entire district, both in summer and winter. There are three main watersheds in the municipality: Ørskog, Vaksvik and Solnør. Fjords, mountains, lakes and rivers are Ørskog's riches. The fjord has rich fishery resources and Ørskogvika has long been renowned as a favoured fishing aera. The angling possibilities in the rivers for salmon and sea trout are good.
